PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

The best rainbows are in Springbank! We are so thankful we’ve had some much needed rain.

Though school has been out for only a short time, it seems like summer is in full swing already. There are still opportunities for summer camps in our community including some spots in our community association sponsored camps. Scroll and take a look.

Thank you to Rocky View County for their support of the SCA. We received grants for community beautification, operating funds and support for our fall community dance. We also thank them for giving residents an opportunity to express their opinions regarding the draft Springbank ASP at an open house in June. There are many viewpoints in our community so make sure to complete their survey so that all can be heard. We’ve also extended our community centre survey as we would like to hear from more of you as this will really help us guide Rocky View County.

If you are a fan of the Calgary Stampede as many are in Springbank, make sure to read our Springbank Spotlight and Chaps and Chinooks. Springbank is home to Stampede Royalty, past and present. Yahoo!

Springbank Summer is here — enjoy!

Springbank Area Structure Plans

While we had no updates on the Area Structure Plan (ASP) last month, there has since been a flurry of activity.  Rocky View County released the draft ASP and hosted an open house on June 28.

Read the draft ASP.

The County has a survey open for residents to complete.  The survey is open until July 14!

Community Centre

Please take a few minutes to respond to our survey on recreation! We have three main questions we are looking for input on:

  1. Use of the money generated from the Springbank Off-Stream Reservoir (SR1)
  2. Input on the land acquired in Springbank for recreation
  3. Input on the preliminary concept plan for the new community centre prepared by RVC

SPRINGBANK GARDENING CLUB

The Springbank Garden Club (SGC) is alive and well although, like everywhere else, we did suffer some setbacks during Covid! Since last September we have enjoyed our usual roster of interesting and informative speakers plus we had a visit to the Solar Roller, currently located just outside of Cochrane.

We continue to meet at the Springbank United Church the 3rd Tuesday each month at 7:00 pm. Last Tuesday some dozen or so of us met for the annual potluck wrap-up meeting and what a selection of food!

There was an active Springbank Garden Club when I moved here in 1978 and over the years the membership has regularly grown, then fallen, and the meeting locations have varied but the comradery and thirst for gardening information has always prevailed.

The Junior Garden club concept was suggested by the late Eric Longeway 25 years ago with full support from the membership. We continue today to provide Springbank school children with seeds for their gardens for a small membership fee. Adult SGC Members visit the gardens in August, take photos which are then posted at the SGC booth at the annual Springbank Fall Fair. Each Junior Garden Member receives a ribbon and a prize for their endeavors. Rocky View County continues to provide a small grant to help support this program.

Membership is not limited to Springbank residents; annual fee is only $25.00. Interested parties may visit the booth at the Springbank Fall Fair where we provide a variety of locally grown plants for sale. Another option is to contact SGC Secretary, Barb.

We continue to enjoy learning new gardening tricks and expanding our knowledge. The accompanying photo was recently taken of a small garden in Ketchican, Alaska.

In the presence of Katie Ohe, she is creating a body of mixed-media work including research, development, and production of a series of artistic sculptural pieces and will engage with the community through workshop and documentation of the process, which will culminate in an exhibition and artist talk to close out her residency on October 14, 2023.

The KOAC Artist in Residence program provides artists with one-on-one support and a place for research, exhibition, and documentation of visual contemporary art. The program is offered to artists at all stages of their career.
